Hello, I have just started reading your book, Live What You Love, at the prompting of a friend. I love the job I am in (IT) but also love the outdoors. I find myself missing the daily dose of sun and the hard laborious work. My fiancee and I have been up here since December of 06 and love it here. We even like the winters (seriously). I guess I am looking for a way to turn my two passions into a career path. Any ideas? Outdoor Technology? Oxymoronic huh? Thanks for the inspiration.
Eric, although we’re thrilled to hear that you’re reading Live What You Love, our latest book is really the one you need. It’s called Changing Your Course and it literally walks you through the 5 steps to successfully change any aspect of your life.
Without doing some research, we’re not sure what the options are in developing a career that connects high technology with the outdoors but we’d be surpised if it didn’t exist. We hate to suggest that you buy yet another book, but in this case, it’s pretty clear that you could use some more concrete advice. If you follow the steps in Changing Your Course, you’ll have your answer.
Keep us posted on your progress and thanks for sharing your thoughts on our blog!
I have just read your “LWYL” book and I am almost done with the first read through of Changing Your Course.
As suggested, I will finish reading it and then go back and “work” it…which is hard for a compulsive person! Normally I would have jumped right in with gusto and not finished.
I love what I do for work (Jewelry Designer/Artist) and have had my own business for over 20 years.
For that time I was as busy as I wanted to be…When I was younger I had single-life distractions and then after I got married and had my son I wanted to be with him all the time. (which gratefully I was)
Now he is a little older and I am ready to take my business to the next step…I just don’t know what that step is. I feel stuck…and a little trapped by negative old tapes in my head.
It almost feels like I am starting over which combined with a shaky financial situation is scary and overwhelming.
I am looking forward to working through your book and I am hopeful the answers will come.
thank you
Pam V.
Thanks for your comment Pam. We can certainly identify with a shaky financial situation but there’s nothing worse than feeling stuck. Take one step at a time and do your homework. Follow each exercise carefully and keep us posted on your progress. Making the decision to change is definitely Step 1 and it sounds like you’re on your way! We’ll be anxious to hear from you.
I love your 10 Clues List! Although I like my boss (most of the time) I am seriously jaded in my job. I am an e-teacher. There is just nothing interesting left in my job duties. I like my co-workers, some of whom I have known for many years, but I dread the thought that I may be stuck in this job for another 25 years. I have absolutely no desire left to teach another lesson or grade another essay. Help!

i ahve recently reread you book. the first time i read it it inspired me to make changes in my personal life to make me a happier man. Since then i have lost 100 lbs and have met an amazing woman. As time went on i started to slip back into the daily grind of life. My girlfriend and i recently moved in with each other. During the move i saw your book and read it cover to cover again{LWYL} In a weeks time i have quit my job in the corp world and her and i have decided to buy a motorhome and travel the us and mexico getting odd and end jobs to get from town to town. Some say we are crazy for doing this but at the age of 25 we figure we are old enough to know better but young enough not to be able to pass this opportunity up. Thank You for being such an inspiration..

Chris, you’re not crazy at all!!! Traveling around in a motor home is a great way to see the world and meet lots of fascinating people. And you’re right in thinking that you can always find a job doing one thing or another. As long as you’re flexible and ready to welcome the unexpected, there are plenty of options. Clearly, this adventure is not about building a career based on society’s expectations. It’s about experiencing as much of life as you can. Fantastic!!! We can’t wait to hear more. If you have time, drop us a line from the road.
And thank YOU for the inspiration! Losing 100 pounds is no easy challenge. Congratulations!
Ava, just the fact that you’ve identified that it’s time for a change is a big step forward. We know plenty of people who work from one day to the next without even considering whether or not they’re still passionate about what they do. Trust your instinct - it won’t let you down. If you haven’t already read through Step 1 in “Changing Your Course”, it sounds like you’re ready to do that now. It will help guide you all along the way. Take your time and follow your heart. Keep us posted on your progress!
